Transforming nursing practice across the lifespan integrating community health, mental health, child health, midwifery and medical surgical nursing: a comprehensive review

Abstract

Nursing practice has undergone substantial transformation in response to evolving healthcare needs, demographic transitions, technological innovations and the increasing complexity of patient care across the lifespan. This comprehensive review synthesizes current evidence on the integration of community health nursing, mental health nursing, child health nursing, midwifery and medical-surgical nursing to highlight their collective contribution to person-centered, evidence-based healthcare. Literature published between 2020 and 2026 was identified through searches of PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, CINAHL, Embase, Cochrane Library and Google Scholar using Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) and relevant keywords. Evidence from clinical guidelines, systematic reviews, randomized controlled trials, cohort studies, qualitative studies and policy reports was narratively synthesized. The findings demonstrate that integrated nursing practice enhances health promotion, disease prevention, early diagnosis, chronic disease management, maternal and neonatal care, child health outcomes, mental health services, acute care, rehabilitation and continuity of care. Nurse-led interventions, interdisciplinary collaboration and the adoption of digital health technologies including telehealth, electronic health records, remote patient monitoring and artificial intelligence consistently improved patient safety, healthcare accessibility, clinical decision-making and quality of care. Despite these advances, challenges related to workforce shortages, healthcare inequities, digital competency, and resource limitations remain significant barriers. Strengthening nursing leadership, evidence-based practice, advanced education, implementation research and technology integration is essential to sustain future healthcare transformation. Integrating nursing specialties across the continuum of care provides a robust framework for improving patient, family and population health outcomes while supporting resilient, equitable and sustainable healthcare systems.
