Abstract

Background: It is necessary to maintain the profession in line with their nursing education. As nursing students enter into the course at an early age, their perception and understanding of future plan can make nursing profession empowered. Current study aimed to find out career advancement plan of the first year B.Sc. nursing students and associated factors influencing their plan who are studying in Government College of Nursing, COM and SDH, West Bengal.

Methods: Quantitative research approach with descriptive survey research design was applied. Self-structured five point Likert scale to assess career plan and influencing factor and a semi structured questionnaire was developed, validated and utilized for data collection.

Results: Students opted mostly four options like higher education (mean 2.83), staying in India and continue service (mean 2.62), joining academic in government institution (mean 2.60) and joining government hospital as clinical nurse (mean 2.47). There were a strongly negative correlation (r=-.9993) between influencing factors and career plan of the students, further the computed coefficient t value (64.79) was found to be higher than the table value (12.71) at 0.05 level of significance.

Conclusions: According to the findings there was statistically significant relationship between career plan and influencing factors. Career plans were significantly associated with demographic variables as the chi square statistic calculated value was higher than the tabulated value at the 0.05 level of significance.
